Review: You know you're in for something different when a film is Christopher Walken to play the role of a professional hit man - and he is not even one of the bad guys! Although it could do with some judicious trimming here and there, Man on Fire is a crime drama that was generally effective in overtly sentimental tone up to be brutal - and almost all tones imaginable in between.Denzel Washington plays Creasy, a former CIA assassin who has just resigned from the business and are looking for some kind of redemption for the sins he's committed. So far, he's looking for answers in a bottle and the Bible and do nothing good either. The movie starts, Mexico was devastated by a series of kidnappings targeting the powerful and well-made, perhaps made by the very police force assigned to keep the law and the order in the community. Creasy accepts the position as bodyguard to the daughter of a rich businessman who rightly fear for their safety. The first third of the film is devoted to the growing friendship between Creasy and his charge, Pita, a sweet girl who slowly works his way into the heart Creasy and hardened feelings initially. The last two thirds of the film becomes melodrama Avenging Angel, as Creasy finds and systematically eliminates all responsible for a tragedy that happens early story.Based the novel by AJ Quinnell, Man on Fire, cleverly written by Brian Helgeland and flashily directed by Tony Scott, the film is action coldly efficient than ever flees the stark brutality of its subject. Taking a risk to ask us to identify with a man who is, in general, to achieve redemption through torture and murder (recognizing disreputable) people. These scenes of carnage and violence are so intense and full of suspense, although sometimes borders on exploitation. Even better is the quiet, intimate moments between Creasy and Pita in the early parts of the film. Washington and Dakota Fanning surprising establish a natural tolerance that helps set the stage for chaos and unrest in follow.Washington carries the film with his stoic quality of justice making us understand his character in an emotional level, even if they do not escape us intellectually. In addition to the two main characters, there are solid performances from Walken, Marc Anthony, Radha Mitchell, Mickey Rourke, Rachel Ticotin and Giancarlo Giannini. But Washington and the lovely Ms. Fanning, losing show.Man on Fire would have been better with a half hour of his time shooting up, but it's better than the movie average crime thriller.
